Daniel Libeskind already determines the site with strong and significant surrounding design. Due to that the hole of ground zero is left empty.
This means the challenge of a memorial design that develops the particular spot, working with the surrounding elements, meeting countless expectations and demands without building anything that disturbs the existing ideas.
It is solved in a proposal, that bundles the local conditions and energies of ground zero and the aching memories of September 11th transforming and harmonizig them within Liebeskind´s design.
The focus is set on the following elements:
. the sunshine (nature)
. the footprins (rememberance)
. the great reminding walls (mournig)
. the 1776 feet tall skyscraper (symbol)
The skyscraper, as a symbol of hope, reflects sunlight onto the memorial site. Small, computer-controlled reflectors on top of the tower, trace the sun and send reflections to the ground of the hole, the walls and the persons at the site. The reflections do not remain static, but move around like a constantly changing painting on the ground. Five times a day they will bundle within the two footprints of the former towers – depending on natural circumstances like the weather.
At the first two events in the morning there will be no sun in the memorial site yet. So only the footprints will be illuminated by the reflections. People within the memorial realize the shadow they cast.
Depending on the season, the natural sunlight will reach the site before noon. Visitors are hit by sunlight and reflection at the same time and cast a double-shadow. They become part of a natural game and complete the picture with an interactive part.
The memorial does not prescribe a certain activity but leaves it up to the visitor to contemplate the events of Febuary 26th and September 11th, getting involved in the shadow casting or just watching the reflections move.
The naturally rather shady ground receives the strong, bright impact of sunlight, and completes Libeskind´s concept to an overall memorial site in and around ground cero.
