The renewal of Hakaniemenranta waterfront is used to create a continuous promenade punctuated by recreation areas and marine infrastructure. The project integrates functional and infrastructural aspects on both sides of the harbour basin in a strong overall picture.
"The proposal presents a clear and original solution to complement the existing urban structure. The waterfront and beach areas are designed with clear lines. The selected open square structure opens diversified views and the courtyards have a nice winding variation." excerpt from the jury protocol
Urban development on the North Bank . On the north bank a new urban development provides housing for about 1.500 residents and complements the existing neighborhood with a soft, undulating skyline. In the first row, mixed-use blocks blend cafés, small kiosks, offices and residences. Elevated inner courtyards open views towards Siltavuorenranta and offer an integrated flood barrier for the whole neighborhood. The outdoor spaces provide different typologies and levels of privacy, from public passageways, through community terraces to protected private gardens. The blocks to the north of
Hakaniemenranta are quieter and mainly residential. The river promenade at the foot of the new development has a strong urban character with wide sun facing sitting steps and direct access to the jettys.
Continuous waterfront promenade . On the south bank, the marinas are integrated in the new waterfront landscape. The pedestrian promenade follows the water edge and encompasses the mooring berths, public green areas and outlooks. A slightly different treatment is used for the marina on the northern shore: panoramic berths point out into the water, while the park is supplemented by a seashore protected from the marine traffic.
