Urban development (277 ha) between the city center and the future lake.
The controlled-flooding of the huge open pit brown coal mines in Jänschwalde began in 2018 and will soon give rise to Germany's largest artificial lake (19km2): the "Cottbuser Ostsee", a major asset for the development of the northern periphery of Cottbus. The framework plan for the "Lake District" covers 277 ha on both sides of a green corridor that replaces the old railroad tracks leading to an industrial area. The site is to be transformed into a dense and mixed urban development area, attractive and diversified, creating the link between the city center and the future marina on the lake. The industrial wastelands disappear, while the existing commercial activities are partly integrated into the future built areas. The new eco-neighborhoods favor soft mobility and are enriched with a new social infrastructure that also benefits the surrounding neighborhoods. The differentiated sequence of green spaces shapes the identity of the “Seevorstadt”, promotes fresh air and integrates the infrastructure for localized stormwater management.
