the overriding guidelines for the redevelopment of the courtyard of the alte feuerwache in cologne‘s agnesviertel are the preservation of the identity and special features of the site while at the same time expanding its functions and potential uses.
the courtyard of the alte feuerwache has a special charm that has come about through the long-standing and great commitment of the courtyard‘s users, through the participation of neighbors and interested citizens. the courtyard has great urban appeal on many levels - on a cultural as well as on a social level. a variety of uses take place throughout the day and throughout the year. of particular note are markets and concerts, which are special events held in the courtyard, and sports and games, which take place daily.
the design goal for the open space redevelopment is based on the special features that the courtyard of the old fire station has both in terms of urban space and for the residents inside of the agnesviertel in everyday life.
qualities on the level of open space planning are elaborated and intensified. an essential guideline of the design is the participatory approach. the courtyard is actively co-designed by the users.
